Greystoke Mahale, a unique experience in the remote western part of Tanzania

Tucked away in the remote Mahale Mountains of Tanzania, Nomads Greystoke Mahale offers a truly one-of-a-kind escape. Surrounded by raw natural beauty, this experience is not for everyone—but for the adventurous at heart, it’s unforgettable. From the rugged journey to get there to the exhilarating (and sometimes grueling) chimpanzee treks, this place offers an experience unlike any other.

Getting to Greystoke Mahale

Let’s start with the journey. Reaching Greystoke Mahale is no small feat. From Arusha, you’ll take a few long bush flights followed by a long boat ride across the shimmering waters of Lake Tanganyika. The travel time from Arusha is around 6 hours. While the trek is part of the adventure, it’s definitely remote and may feel daunting, especially if you’re traveling with kids. I would not recommend this trip for children under 15 due to the long travel times and the physically demanding activities and the nature of the camp itself.

But once you arrive, the breathtaking views make the effort worth it—lush forests, towering mountains, and a pristine beach setting that feels untouched by time. It’s remote, wild, and beautifully raw.

The Chimpanzee Experience: Why You Visit

Let’s be honest—the chimpanzees are the main reason you come here. The hikes to see them are no walk in the park. Expect steep, uneven terrain and thick forest. This is not for the faint of heart, but it’s also what makes the experience so rewarding. I’d highly recommend packing gaiters to keep debris out of your boots and walking sticks for balance and support. Trust me, you’ll need them.

That said, when you finally come across the chimps, all the effort fades away. Watching them interact—hearing their calls, seeing their playful behavior, and observing their strikingly human-like mannerisms—is nothing short of magical. It’s an intimate and humbling experience that stays with you long after you leave. However, be prepared: if you don’t manage to spot them (which can happen), there isn’t much else to do here. The focus is entirely on the chimps.

The Staff: Exceptional Hospitality

One of the highlights of my stay was the staff. Their warmth and dedication to making every guest feel welcome are unmatched. From the moment you arrive, you can feel their passion for this special place. They are incredibly knowledgeable about the chimps, the surrounding environment, and the conservation efforts that keep this region thriving. Their kindness and professionalism truly elevate the entire experience.

The Bandas: Uniquely Adventurous

The open-air bandas at Greystoke Mahale are stunning in their simplicity, blending seamlessly with the natural environment. With thatched roofs, open bathrooms, and panoramic views of Lake Tanganyika, the accommodations are beautifully unique. But they’re not for everyone—this setup is best suited for travelers who embrace adventure and don’t mind a few jungle critters sharing the space. If you’re looking for plush luxury or enclosed comfort, this might not be your vibe.

Final Thoughts

Nomads Greystoke Mahale is as remote and wild as it gets. It’s not the easiest place to reach, and it’s certainly not for everyone. The physically demanding hikes, the open-air bandas, and the isolation make it an adventure in every sense of the word. But if you’re up for the challenge, the rewards are profound. The chance to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat is unforgettable, and the stunning setting is like nowhere else on earth.

I’d recommend this destination to travelers who are adventurous, physically fit, and comfortable with the idea of stepping out of their comfort zones. Pack smart (don’t forget those gaiters and walking sticks!) and prepare for an experience you’ll talk about for years to come.
